SRINAGAR The drug addiction has caught on with the youth here as the police have apprehended a large number of people in the last few months here.
On Sunday police said that they arrested two drug peddlers during a surprise checking at Ashai Bagh Nigeen and recovered 500 bottles of codeine phosphate from them. The police party of police station Nigeen intercepted a Hyundai Accent vehicle bearing registration number WB 02M8484 during surprise checking and nabbed the duo.
A day earlier, police had arrested a drug peddler in Khanyar area of Srinagar and recovered codeine bottles from his possession. The police party during a routine checking arrested the peddler with a large quantity of banned codeine phosphate bottles. Subsequently a case FIR No 2/19 under was registered at police station Khanyar.
On January 5, police also arrested a drug peddler during checking and recovered contraband substance from his possession. The naka was laid at Khanyar during which Owais Ahmad Gilla, son of Abdul Ahad Gilla, resident of Habba Kadal was arrested along with 183 tablets of Spasmoproxyvan.
Police officials said that the youth were indulging in use of banned drugs here. The drug trafficking was mostly prevalent in the areas of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Hazratabal and Nigeen in Downtown Srinagar as well as in Natipora and Chanpora areas of uptown city.
Earlier the personnel of police post Chanapora during a routine checki arrested a youth along with 9 bottles of codeine phosphate and 12 strips of Spasmoproxyvan.
Doctors and police officials said that the use of drugs was even prevalent among the teenagers here. The Srinagar city has topped in the drug addiction which was more prevalent here than any other parts of Kashmir.
As per the government data most of the drug addiction cases of 45 per cent have been reported from Srinagar from 4000 cases of drug addiction registered at SMHS hospitals drug de-addiction centre.
The number was only 10 percent from Budgam, 5.88 % from Pulwama, 3.6% from Shopian, 9.55% from Anantnag, 2.69% from Kulgam, 1.7% from Ganderbal, 3.43 from Bandipora, 9.8 from Baramulla, and 6.12 from Kupwara.
Officials said that the youth are particularly involved in drug addiction. The Government Psychiatric hospital Srinagar receives around 90% drug abusers in the age group of 17-35 years.
Experts have said that the rampant self-medication was also responsible for drug addiction.
Individuals begin to use drugs with varied choices. Some people use drugs to relieve some medical condition but continue to use them after the medical condition is over. Some people who feel depressed begin to use the drug to self-medicate and get addicted to it, medical experts said. Sometimes a traumatized event or a relationship issue lead a person to drugs. Some other people use the drug to escape from the pressures of life or to experience the pleasure of drugs or to compliance with the peer group compatibility to have a different view of the world around them. This voluntary initiation into the world of addictive drugs has strongly influenced societys view of drug abuse and drug addiction and their treatment, they added.
