SRINAGAR Residents of many areas of Srinagar city Monday complained of frequent power cuts.
The residents said that the Power Development Department has extended power curtailment to over six hours even in metered areas.
The power supply was snapped early morning from from 9:45 am to 10:45 am in the areas of Lal Chowk, Amira Kadal, Saraibala and Magarmal Bagh areas, residents said.
Residents of Umarabad colony in Peerbagh as well as Hyderpora and Chanapora also complained that they were supplied low voltage electricity. Even as we are paying our bills regularly but the power voltage is so low that we have to use candles during evening times, said a resident.
The power situation in Srinagar has not improved despite public protests as well as the notice by the State Human Rights Commission to Chief Engineer Power Development Department (PDD) for resorting to unscheduled power cuts both in metered and non-metered areas.
The SHRC earlier sought a report from the Chief Engineer as to why power cuts are effected even without a notice. A complaint received by the commission had said that as the winter season has begun and with the recent snowfall the power development department (PDD) has started unscheduled and irregular power cuts in metered and non-metered areas.
The residents of HMT recently protested the frequent power cuts by the authorities. A group of the residents of Mustafabad sector 2 (Lane 3) area of HMT demanded upgradation of power transmission system in the area. They said that the power supply in the area remains frequently affected. They said that the area lacks a proper transmission network system which has resulted into the power outages.
Residents of Khonakhan Dalgate have decried unscheduled power cuts in the area.
The residents of the Dalgate have also rued the frequent power cuts. The authorities resort to frequent power cuts, due to which the area which houses many hotels faces unscheduled power cuts that has badly affected the business, said a local residents.
According to locals the power cuts were being enforced even in Lal Chowk and Dalgat even as there are many government and private offices which are located in the areas. The residents have urged on the Governor, Satya Pal Malik, to intervene in the matter and ensure a proper supply of electricity.
The opposition has also said that the authorities have failed to improve the power situation here. Former MLA Eidgah Mubarak Gul earlier decried unscheduled power cuts in the summer capital.
Gul said authorities have failed to adhere to a scheduled power curtailment in Srinagar areas as a result of which the residents in areas like Eidgah, Safakadal, Anchaar, Nowgam, Humhama and Bemina areas are bearing the brunt of unscheduled cuts during evening hours.
What has been seen during Governor rule is that administration has shifted its focus from summer to winter capital leaving Downtown areas powerless, he added.
