SRINAGAR: The youth shot dead in Sopore on Tuesday night had been chased into a mosque hammam and gunned down ruthlessly, reports from the northern town said today.
Suhail Ahmad Sofi had been talking to a friend in a compound near the local mosque in the Doabgah when the attackers appeared and fired a number of rounds towards them, locals said.
Sofi rushed into the mosque hammam to escape the attack, but one of the assailants pursued him inside and pumped five bullets into him.
The 18-year-old youth, who had recently joined a higher secondary school after passing his class 10 examination, died on the spot.
The killing took place in the Doabgah area of Sopore at around 9. 50 p.m.
Sofis sister, Rifat Ara, said that he had received a phone call from his neighbour Ghulam Haidar last night, and both had gone out for a stroll after dinner.
Shortly afterwards we were informed that Suhail had been shot dead, she said.
The superintendent of the police for Sopore said that preliminary investigations indicated that the killing had been carried out by the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba.
A case has been registered under sections 302 and 7/27, and further investigations are on, the police officer said.
Reports last night had said that Sofi was gunned down outside a local mosque after meeting a group of religious preachers from Maharashtra holding an ijtima inside.
