SRINAGAR: A South Kashmir resident accused of murder who escaped from police lock-up in the Mattan town on Tuesday night has been rearrested from Srigufwara, the police said today.
Ghulam Nabi Bhat was in custody for having fatally injured his younger brother Muhammad Shafi on March 16 over a property dispute.
According to the police, Bhat had jumped over the boundary wall of the police station yesterday taking advantage of darkness, and run away.
Police parties were dispatched to various places, and the accused was finally nabbed at Srigufwara at around 5.30 in the afternoon, the police said today.
A police constable had been placed under suspension for the lock-up lapse, even as the murder victims family accused authorities of providing Ghulam Nabi with and an escape route.
Muhammad Shafi died on March 19, and his brother bolted from custody after spending barely a day in the lock up.
Earlier, denying the safe passage charges, the Mattan police had said that a hunt had been launched to bring the escapee before the law.
