SRINAGAR The employees of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) continued their strike on third day on Thursday seeking action against a female councillor, who they alleged assaulted one of the employees.
The employees staged protest for the 3rd consecutive day in the premises of SMC.
On Monday, a female councillor, who has accused Mayor Junaid Mattu of sexual harassment, barged into his office, where as per the employees, she assaulted a Private Secretary, and broke office computers and fixtures.
In protest, the employees, including senior officials as well as the city sanitation workers, have gone on a strike.
We demand strict action against the councillor. The Authorities have to disqualify her and she must take back the charges which she has levelled. Till then we will not resume our work, said, Chairman of Coordination Committee of SMC, Mohammad Maqbool Malik.
He said that many of the newly elected councillors have assaulted the ward officers due to which they are not able to work properly.
Yesterday some unknown councillors assaulted one of the ward officers Mohammad Maqbool Bhat. If authorities did not take any proper action we will not resume our work, Malik said.
President, SMC Field Staffers, Mehraj ul-Din Bujja, said that they will not tolerate the goons in the corporation.
There are many other issues which we want should be resolved which include the salary of the consolidate employees through online mode, he added.
The strike has left the city with heaps of garbage at various places, as sanitation workers kept away from work.
We have strict order from our union that dont work and we are following the same, we cannot work till our Union tells us to, a group of sanitation workers said.
Garbage heaps are also piling up near city hospitals putting the patients as well as attendants at risk.
People visiting the SMC office for other issues, like date of birth certificates, also had to face problems. From past three days, no garbage was lifted from the designated points due to ongoing strike.
Bujja further said the tussle between the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor has created a lot of problems for the employees. Let us clarify that this strike is not in favour of anybody but it is against the assault made by a Corportor on one of our employees, he said.
He added that if Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Corportors wont change their behaviour, the employees wont allow them to enter into Corporation office.
