SRINAGAR: Rowdy-ism touched a new low in the state assembly on Tuesday when BJP member Jugal Kishore almost struck the minister for social welfare, Sakina Itoo, a blow during a heated argument.
Kishore was marshalled out of the house, and suspended by the speaker for the rest of the budget session.
Chief minister Omar Abdullah termed the incident shameful and voiced strong disapproved of the the behavior of the BJP member.
Kishore had intervened in the proceedings, claiming that social welfare minister Sakina Itoo was misleading the house by her wrong replies.
Itoo shot back, saying that it is not her job to mislead people as, she contended, Kishore did.
The BJP MLA leapt from his seat, came face to face with the minister, and tried to manhandle her.
The member appeared to have lost his balance of mind. I felt he was not in his senses. He even tried to assault the minister but our timely intervention saved her from the attack, an NC MLA later said.
The incident sent shock waves through legislators and all members condemned Kishores unruly behavior.
The assembly later passed a resolution suspending Kishore for the rest of the session.
Chief minister Omar Abdullah strongly condemned what he described as derogative and aggressive posture exhibited by BJP legislator.
What kind of disciplinary action Mr Speaker is going to take for this indiscipline, I leave that to him, he said.
Our heads are bowed in shame. On the one hand we talk of protecting women and giving them respect, and on the other, elected representatives demonstrate such a disrespectful and aggressive behaviour against a lady member. This deserves to be condemned with strongest words, he said.
