Soz Accuses SMC Of ‘Protecting’ Encroachers

SRINAGAR — Former Union Minister and senior congress leader, Prof Saifudidin Soz, Monday said that Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has never carried out the “demolitions of illegal construc­tions” seriously. He said that the SMC authorities have failed to launch a “comprehensive drive with an invitation to the public for support.” Former Congress state president, Soz, said that though the “demolitions are made every year , these have always been haphazardly done constituting an “eye-wash”

“Who doesn’t know, what had been happening between, for in­stance, the Ward Officers and the unruly long hands,’” he said.

“It is in public interest that I am now attempting to invite the at­tention of the Authority to mark a departure from adhoc measures and adopt a well-thought-out comprehensive policy on the pro­posed demolitions,” he said.

“The best method would be to publish a ‘white paper’ on the il­legal constructions that took place in the past and the ones that are in the process,” he said.

“The adhoc approach for demo­litions must stop and a sound legal frame work on action against ille­gal constructions must be issued by the Corporation,” he said.

Soz also raised questions over the violation of the master plan, and said that the illegal construc­tions have not been stopped. “ I wonder what kind of a master plan for Srinagar is envisaged when unruly and disruptive elements in society continue to indulge in vio­lation of the rules with the conniv­ance of the junior and the senior officers of the Corporation,” he said. Former Minsters comments came close on the heels of the SMC authorities launched drives to evict the foot path vendors. Many netizens have said that the Corpo­ration has evicted the poor people while leaving out the influential who have violated the master plan.
