SRINAGAR Pulwama district of south Kashmir recorded abysmal voter turnout of 1.4% while Kupwara district recorded polling of 53.6% in the final of the 9-phased elections in Kashmir Valley on Tuesday. There was no polling in Shopian and Kulgam even as 11 and 23 Panchayat Halqas respectively were scheduled to vote in the final phase. For 89 panch wards, four Sarpanchs and 16 Panchs were elected unopposed in Shopian while no candidates in fray on remains wards. Similarly in Kulgam, there were 167 Panch wards with 5 Sarpanchs elected unopposed along with 11 Panchs. There was no election on remaining wards for lack of candidates.
The polling begun at 8 a.m. and ended at 2 p.m. Pulwama saw voter turnout of 1.4%, Ganderbal 20.9%, Anantnag 24.8%, Budgam 38.8%, Baramulla 38.9%, Bandipora 46.0% and 53.6% in Kupwara. Overall, 38.8% voted in the final phase, election officials said.
According to the Chief Electoral Officer Jammu and Kashmir, 430 candidates were in the fray for 55 sarpanch and 138 panch seats, while 68 sarpanches and 433 panch have been elected unopposed for this phase. 68745 electorates were eligible for voting for sarpanch constituencies whereas it was 20688 for panch constituencies. In this phase, 452 polling stations were set up of which 346 were categorised as hypersensitive.
Chief Electoral Officer J&K said at the conclusion of the final phase of Panchayat Polls J&K witnessed an overall polling percentage of 74% in all the phases including 83.5% in Jammu division and 44.4% in Kashmir division.
He said in the first phase of polling held on 17 November 2018, 74.1% polling was recorded across J&K including 64.5% in Kashmir division and 79.4% in Jammu division.
In the Phase-II of Panchayat Polls held on 20 November 2018, overall 71.1% polling was witnessed across the State with an 80.4% polling in Jammu division and 52.2% in Kashmir division.
He said in Phase-III, the State witnessed a poll percentage of 75.2% including 55.7% in Kashmir division and 83.0% in Jammu division.
In Phase-IV, he said, JK witnessed 71.3% voting with 82.4% electors exercising their franchise in Jammu division and 32.3% in Kashmir division.
In the Phase-V of Panchayat Polls overall poll percentage of 71.1% was witnessed across the State with 85.2% polling in Jammu division and 33.7% in Kashmir division.
In the Phase-VI of Panchayat Polls overall poll percentage of 76.9% was recorded across J&K including 17.3% in Kashmir division and 84.6% in Jammu division.
In the Phase-VII of Panchayat Polls overall poll percentage of 75.3% was witnessed across the State with 84.8% in Jammu division and 30.3% in Kashmir division.
In the Phase-VIII, 79.9% polling was recorded across the state including 85.1% in Jammu division and 49.6% in Kashmir division.
