SRINAGAR A soldier allegedly involved in the Bulandshahr firing in Uttar Pradesh in which a police Inspector and a civilian were killed was detained by his unit in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.
A police official said that Jeetendra Malik, deployed with 22 Rashtriya Rifles in Sopore, was held after he reported for duty. He was shifted him to capital Srinagar soon after. “The accused soldier will be handed over to UP police’s special task force for further investigation,” said the police.
The soldier is facing allegations of killing the police inspector during a mob frenzy over alleged cow slaughter in Bulandshahr on Monday. He was in his hometown Bulandshahr on a 15-day leave when the violence took place. The Uttar Pradesh police spotted him in a video on the day of violence.
Reports said that Jeetendra Malik alias Jeetu Fauji was tracked using technical surveillance by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terror Squad after his location was traced to North Kashmir.
Besides Inspector Subodh Singh, a local youth, Sumit was also killed in the violence on December 3.
Earlier in the day, Army Chief Bipin Rawat had offered full cooperation to the U.P. police in connection with the Army personnel’s involvement in the violence.
“If some evidence surface, we will bring him to police if they want. If anyone has any suspicion we will produce him to police. We will fully cooperate in the investigation,” said General Rawat.
