SRINAGAR Defying police restrictions, the activists of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Tuesday evening staged candlelight protests in Srinagar against the increased human rights violations.
Activists of JKLF lit candles and torch lights as part of the programme announced by the JRL to protest against human rights abuses in Kashmir.
The JRL leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik appealed people to observe Human Rights Week which began here on Monday.
JKLF spokesman in a statement issued in Srinagar said that the activists of the separatist outfit staged peaceful candlelight protests at Maisuma, Abi-Guzar and Soura area of Srinagar against worsening human rights situation in Kashmir.
The JKLF spokesman said after the conclusion of yesterdays candlelight protests police launched crackdown and arrested various JKLF leaders including vice chairman Showkat Ahmad Bakhshi, Noor Muhammad Kalwal, Sheikh Abdul Rashid and Muhammad Yasin Butt and other activists.
A unique element of todays protest was the participation of respected women and children especially at Abi-Guzar who despite police intimidations came out of their houses and participated in this candlelight protest and raised slogans against Indian aggression. The protesters were addressed by various JKLF leaders who while condemning the ongoing military and police crackdown, spree of killings, burning and blasting down properties, spree of arrests, use of black laws against political leaders and activists and choking of space on political activities and programs said that when peaceful political activities like expression of grief by burning candles is disallowed by the claimants of biggest democracy, it can only be termed but as travesty and sham of democracy, added the spokesperson.
