SRINAGAR A large number of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) activists staged a protest march here on Thursday seeking revocation of the Governor’s order turning the Jammu and Kashmir Bank into a public sector undertaking.
The PDP activists led by senior leader and former Minister Naeem Akhtar took out the march in Srinagar seeking a rollback of Governor Satya Pal Malik’s decision. The party activists chanted anti-administration slogans while taking out a protest rally from party headquarters to J&K bank headquarters.
The protesting PDP leaders and workers demanded immediate revocation of the decision which they said was taken by the Governor at the behest of New Delhi to make financially independent institution into a dependent one.
However, a police party intercepted them at Polo View and prevented them from marching ahead. The protesters were chanting slogans like JK bank hamara hai (JK bank belongs to us), and roll back SAC decision rollback.
“Turning J&K Bank into a PSU is an assault on the economy of Jammu and Kashmir,” Akhtar said. “We want the Governor to revoke it. We won’t relent until the order is revoked.”
Nayeem also hit out the officials for taking a decision and said that if PDP comes to power it will do so on the first day after assuming office. Some bureaucrats tend to be viceroys of Kashmir and think that they are wiser than one and all in Kashmir which they are not. Kashmir is not a colony but a part of India. Though there are very good officers but some officers tending to create controversies. We urge Governor to immediately withdraw the order otherwise new popular government on the very first day of its taking over will withdraw the order, he said.
On November 22, the Governor-led State Administrative Council (SAC) had approved the proposal for treating Jammu and Kashmir Bank Limited as a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU).
The move was criticised by all regional political parties, trade and business organisations as also the employees of the J&K Bank. In the last few days, it has snowballed into a major issue.
