SRINAGAR A large number of students of Central University of Kashmir Saturday came on the roads and protested for several hours to press for the release of two boys who were reading at the University. Government forces have detained two of the CUK students after lifting them from their rented places in Nowgam.
Hundreds of students boycotted the class work and came on the roads. They blocked the main Nowgam bypass highway for several hours resulting in disruption of traffic on the road.
Two students who were identified as Suhail Ahmed from Shopian and Mohammad Ismail from Baramulla were earlier detained by the government forces from their rented accommodation near the University. An officer from the concerned police station refused to give any details about the arrest of the duo. Both the students were reportedly picked up from their rented accommodation during a night raid.
In response to their detention, scores of the students this morning took out the protest demonstration and demanded immediate release of the duo. Two of our students have been arrested from their rooms in Nowgam. We have taken up the matter with senior district administration and police officials, said a senior CUK official.
Another University official said that both were regular students of the Varsity and have been coming to their classes daily. Earlier the students had assembled at the campus, later they poured on the streets and disrupted the traffic movement to press for release of their mates.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Ismail Parray admitted the arrest of two CUK students, saying that they were arrested for their involvement in militancy related activities.
SSP Srinagar said that an FIR was registered against them eight hours before they were arrested. The arrested duo was involved in militancy related activities, he said.
Jamaat Seeks Release Of detained CUK students
Jamaat-e-Islami on Saturday condemned the intimidation of Kashmiri students both within and outside Kashmir and demanded the release of two students of Central University of Kashmir (CUK) who have been detained by government forces.
In a statement issued here, a spokesperson of Jamaat said, In the universities and colleges outside Jammu and Kashmir scores of students have been so far arrested by different Indian agencies on false and frivolous grounds. Besides the pre-planned attacks on them by the communal elements is forcing a good number of Kashmiri students to give up their studies.
He said that despite assurances by the university and other authorities, there is no sign of any relief to for the students.
During the previous night, he said, these unruly forces have picked up two innocent students from their rented accommodation in Nowgam without informing the Central University authorities.
These arrests seem to be a part of well-designed plan to deter the youth of Kashmir from continuing their higher studies and to push them towards extremism. Their families have neither been informed of their arrest nor the grounds thereof which is a blatant violation of the human rights happening unfortunately only in the valley.
He said these unbridled forces have let loose a reign of terror throughout the Valley and have made the life of a common man a virtual hell.
Seeking release of detained students, Jamaat expressed solidarity with the detained students and their families and impressed upon the human rights organizations to come forward and take proper and effective steps to safeguard the life and liberty of the hapless people of Kashmir, facing the worst kind of oppression at the hands of the Indian forces and other allied agencies.
