SRINAGAR The power cuts in Kashmir have got severe putting the people through an ordeal ahead of winter.
Power Development Department (PDD) has started unscheduled curtailment in all districts and even the metered areas are not spared in power curtailment.
Complaints have been received from Srinagar city about the power curtailment. We are facing regular power cuts for past one week even when the area is fully metered, said a resident of Bemina.
Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Padshahi Bag, said that the problem intensifies in the evening and the area descends into darkness for several hours.
He said that every year PDD comes up with a same excuse of less generation and more demand. Even as power tariff was raised so many times during past years, PDD has nothing to offer to its consumers except lame excuses, he said.
The residents of Noorbag area of Qamarwari have said that residents face power cuts even in this metered area. The PDD officials had promised 24-hour power supply to the area while installing meters. However we are facing power cuts. This is sheer discrimination, residents said.
In Chanapora, Batmaloo, Hyderpora, Rambagh areas as well people are also complaining about the unscheduled power cuts. The power cuts have indicated that the winter would be harsh this winter, said Habib-ullah of Hyderpora.
The situation is not different in north Kashmirs Baramullah district and complaints of power outages have also poured in from there. Even in the metered colonies like Kanlibagh, Friends Colony, Noorbagh people are being subjected to long hour power cuts, people complained.
In our area there is no schedule for load-shedding and it is up to PDD employees to curtail the power and they exercise the curtailment option frequently, said Asim Mustafa of Baramulla.
Residents of Sopore from the areas of Noorbagh, New Colony, Batpoora, Armpora, Khushal Mutu also complained about power cuts.
However the PDD has refuted that it was resorting to severe cuts. There are no such complaints, but yes sometimes intense load cause power cuts, said a senior officialof the PDD, adding, people are resorting to theft and hooking and during the winter months we have seen that even in posh colonies people resort to hooking resulting problem in irregular supply of electricity.
Meanwhile sources in power department said that the PDD is yet to formulate the new curtailment schedule and it could be issued next month.
