SRINAGAR: With an aim to sensitize and broaden the understanding amongst the scholars, teachers and academicians for preserving the historic manuscripts, the Department of Persian Studies, University of Kashmir is all set to host a 21-day workshop on manuscriptology and paleography (The science of collecting, classifying, preserving manuscripts and the science of deciphering ancient writings as evident in documents and inscription) from 15th of March.
The workshop is being sponsored by National Mission for Manuscripts, Ministry of Culture Government of India.
According to the organizers the main aim of the workshop is to train the teachers and scholars of the interdisciplinary areas who can easily read and understand the different scripts of these manuscripts which have been preserved in different libraries and personal domain of the people of Kashmir.
Programme Coordinator Dr. Jhangir Iqbal said India is a veritable storehouse of Manuscripts but there is absence of any standardized system to preserve these manuscripts.
There is dire need to teach people particularly those who are relevant to the field about the various standardized methods for the preservation of different manuscripts, Dr. Jhangir said.
India is having about 5,000,000 manuscripts as mentioned in the project document prepared in 2002 by the Department of Culture, Government of India.
According to the experts some institutions have attempted to record and preserve different manuscripts but they do not have any systematic attempt to consolidate these manuscripts into a database.
The Department of Persian Studies has taken up this serious issue of Manuscriptology and paleography with National Mission for Manuscripts Ministry of Culture Government of India for reviving the manuscripts of national importance, he said.
The inaugural function of the workshop will be held at Ibn-e-Khuldoon Auditorium at University of Kashmir on 15th of March at 11:00 am which will be presided over by Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir while Dr. Khawaja Ikram Director National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) will be the chief guest.
Besides the function will be attended by Dean Academic Affairs, Prof Ali Mohammad Shah, Registrar University of Kashmir, Prof Zaffar Ahmad Reshi, faculty members of the department and the participants from the different departments of the varsity.
The workshop will be attended by different teachers and Research scholars of Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Islamic studies, Center for Center Asian Studies (CCAS), Kashmir studies, Iqbaliyat, Marqaz-i-Noor and History department.
