SRINAGAR The local residents of Newa area of Pulwama Thursday protested against the damage to property and ruthless beating of people including the elderly men by the government forces last night.
The protesters alleged after a brief exchange of gunfire between militants and forces the CRPF personnel barged into the houses and let loose a reign of terror in the area.
In the past two months militants have attacked the CRPF 183 Battalion camp in Newa at least five times and recently the troopers even sustained injuries in the attack. Local residents said that on Wednesday night there was a brief exchange of gunfire and the force personnel entered into the houses and resorted to massive damage of electronic gadgets and vehicles.
The force personnel thrashed people when they were asleep. It was a hell like situation in the area. Women folk hid themselves as the troopers were hurled invectives, said a group of residents, adding that two people sustained grievous injuries and were shifted to a Srinagar hospital for treatment. The locals said that after every militant attack the troopers target civilian population while authorities have failed to provide them any respite.
The protesting population threatened to migrate from the area while some of the people have already moved to safer places. On the directions of Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, a police party led by an officer visited the area to pacify the protesters. The police officer assured the local population that in future action would be initiated against those who will target them. Witnesses said that despite assurances, some of the people migrated from the area.
