SRINAGAR Moderate Hurriyat leader and Ittehadul Muslimeen chairman, Maulana Masroor Abbas Ansari was shifted to Central Jail Srinagar on Monday, three days after his arrest.
Masroor Abbas was arrested on October 12 on the eve of third phase of Urban Local Bodies Polls. He was lodged in Safa Kadal police station for the last three days and on Monday police produced a challan against him and shifted him to Central Jail, a spokesman for Ittehadul Muslimeen (IUM) said.

Earlier on Sunday there were sporadic protests in various areas against his arrest. Hundreds of people blocked Srinagar Baramulla highway at a number of places demanding his release.
Maulana Masroor, who underwent a liver transplant recently, needs special medical care and by arresting him authorities have put his life in danger, IUM spokesman said.
Hurriyat Conference issued a statement denouncing the arrest of Masroor Abbas.
Hurriyat alleged that the arrest “actually was a part of bigger operation across Kashmir under which resistance leaders are lodged in various jails”.
The Hurriyat said that lodging senior leader like Maulana Masroor Ansari in Central Jail is a highly undemocratic move as his confinement can further deteriorate his health as he is already suffering from various ailments.
