SRINAGAR Protests broke out at many places on Sunday against the arrest of Maulana Masroor Abbas son of senior Shia leader Maulana Abbas Ansari.
Maulana Masroor was arrested on the eve of Urban Local Body polls in Srinagar on Thursday and is lodged in Safa Kadal police station since.

Large number of people came out on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway on Sunday and staged protests against continued detention of Masroor Abbas.
Chanting slogans in favour of Masroor Abbas, who is also executive member of the moderate Hurriyat Conference, people staged protests in many areas of Srinagar and Baramulla districts, a spokesman of his Ittehadul Muslimeen party said.

Protests were held at several places on the highway like Mirgund, Baliheran, Rambel, Matipura and Hanjivera, the spokesman said.
At Mirgund hundreds of people blocked the highway for several hours and it was only after senior police officials arrived there and assured them about his release later in the day that the protesters dispersed peacefully.

Maulana Masroor, who underwent a liver transplant recently, needs special medical care and by arresting him authorities have put his life in danger, IUM spokesman said.
Meanwhile Hurriyat (M ) Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq denounced authorities for arresting Maulana Masroor Abbas.
“Strongly denounce the authoritarian and vindictive arrest of Hurriyat leader Masroor Abbas Ansari as the state’s election drama has flopped,” Mirwaiz said on his twitter handle.
