SRINAGAR An activist of Hurriyat Conference was killed by unknown gunmen in Meemender area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Thursday, sparking protests by the locals.
Reports said that Tariq Ahmad Ganie, who was a former militant, was fired upon by gunmen near his home at Meemender village.
Ganie son of Mohammad Yaqoob Ganie received serious bullet wounds and was taken to nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
A police spokesman in a statement issued here said that militants shot at and critically injured Ganie.
“The individual was evacuated to nearby hospital for medical attention, however, he succumbed to his injuries,” the spokesman said.
Police have registered a case in this regard and investigations has been initiated in an instant manner, he said.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people participated in the funeral prayers of the deceased Hurriyat activist. A group of militants also appeared at the funeral and fired scores of shots in air to pay homage to the Hurriyat activist.
