SRINAGAR Dr Sayed Aqeel Hussain, consultant psychiatrist and member International advisory board World Health Organisation, in Geneva has been awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrist (FRCPsych) by the Nomination Committee of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, London.
Fellowship has been awarded as a ‘Mark of Distinction’ and recognition of contributions to psychiatry both in Kashmir and in UK.
Dr Aqeel is the first psychiatrist of Kashmiri origin to be awarded the Fellowship award by the Royal College of Psychiatrists London.
Dr Aqeel completed his Psychiatric training from UK and passed his membership exam of the Royal College of Psychiatrists London in 2008.
Dr Aqeel returned to Kashmir in 2011 and worked as a consultant Psychiatrist at Government Psychiatric Disease Hospital till 2015. During these years Dr Aqeel coordinated various training programmes, both in primary and secondary care services in collaboration with Royal College of Psychiatrists London and Health and Medical Education Department of Jammu and Kashmir with support from WHO Geneva. Three teams from Royal College visited Kashmir and trained more than 200 professionals.
The training programme was nominated as the most popular programme out of more than 120 nominations from across the world by WHO Assembly Geneva.The training programmes were conducted as part of MOU between Royal College of Psychiatrists London and J&K Health and Medical Education Department the signing of which was facilitated by Dr Aqeel Hussain.
Dr Sayed Aqeel Hussain was also responsible for arranging observership for various medical students in united kingdom to get an insight into working set up of NHS.UK
As part of MOU Dr Aqeel will continue to coordinate projects in Kashmir which includes projects to improve school mental health programme in collaboration with Health and Medical Education Department
