SRINAGAR The iconic Jamia Masjid of Srinagar is all set to get a facelift after nearly 250 years. The restoration work on the Sultanate era masjid started on Tuesday.
The Jamia Auqaf members said that the Masjids heritage minarets will be given a facelift initially.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Kashmirs chief cleric who also delivers the Friday congregation sermon at the mosque tweeted: Alhamdulillah, restoration work in progress on the heritage minarets of the historic #JamaMasjid after gap of around 250 years .Under the supervision of experts work undertaken by Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid.
Mirwaiz also took on the spot inspection of administrative works and overall cleanliness drive in and around Jama Masjid.
Despite limited resources with the Anjuman this work has been untaken by them with the help of experts to preserve the minarets and restore them to their original beauty. While repairing these minarets extreme care is being taken to maintain their originality, a spokesman for the Jamia Auqaf said.
Jama Masjid is the religio-cultural and spiritual centre of Kashmir and a major tourist attraction in the city.
Situated at Nowhatta in the middle of the Old City, it was built by Sultan Sikandar Shah, Shahmiri Sultan in 1394 CE, under the order of Mir Syed Muhammad Hamadani, son of Ameer-e-Kabeer Mir Syed Ali Hamadani.
