SRINAGAR Two unidentified militants on Tuesday were killed in a fierce 15-hour-long gunfight with government forces in Tujjar area of Sopore in north Kashmirs Baramulla district.
Reports said that armys 22 RR, special operations group (SOG) of police and CRPF laid a siege around Tujjar area of Sopore on Monday night and launched a cordon and search operation. When the search team cornered the area, the militants hiding in a residential house opened random fire upon them in a bid to break the cordon.
The government forces, reports said retailed the fire triggering off a brief encounter. The militants managed to change their location amidst the exchange of fire.
As the guns went silent, joint forces installed high voltage lights and maintained the cordon tightly throughout the night.
In the wee hours today, militants exchanged another round of gunfire with the government forces. The intermittent exchange of fire continued till Monday noon prompting the authorities to snap internet service in the apple town besides ordering the closure of educational institutions.
In the last round of fire, two holed up militants were killed.
SSP Sopore, Javed Iqbal said that two militants were killed in the encounter that started after a cordon was laid in the area on Monday evening.
We have called two families for identifying the militants. One is from Tujjar Shareef and another from Kralgund, Iqbal said.
He said that police suspects that the two militants were Abdul Majid Mir of Tujjar and Abdul Gani Khwaja of Kralgund.
