PULWAMA District Development Commissioner Pulwama today inaugurated a cocoon auction market at sericulture Complex here which was attended by buyers from within and outside the state.
The DDC said that there has been a remarkable improvement in the quality of cocoons in the district owing to clement weather conditions. It was said that farmers are fetching a desirable price ranging from Rs 1000-1200 per kg of the cocoon.
On the occasion, DDC also interacted with the growers and directed the officials of the Sericulture Department to prepare an action plan for the logistics and quarantine measures for the cocoon production in the district.
He said that sericulture is an age-old occupation people of the state and Kashmir has been a part of historic silk route. He called for concerted efforts to rejuvenate the silk industry in the district which he said would benefit thousands of unemployed youth.
