SRINAGAR Authorities here have decided to impose restrictions in parts of Srinagar on Wednesday to prevent traditional 8th Muharram procession which remains banned in the city since 1989.
A police official said that restrictions will be imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Shaheed Gunj, Batamaloo, Shergari, Kothibagh, Ram Munshi Bagh, Maisuma, and Kral Khud police stations.
He said the restrictions will be imposed as a preventive measure in view of eighth day of Muharram to maintain law and order.
The traditional Muharram processions used to be taken out from Guru Bazar near Karan Nagar and would pass through Jehangir Chowk, Budshah Chowk and culminate at Imambargah at Dalgate before a ban was imposed on it by the then administration of Governor Jagmohan soon after the break out of militant movement.
Successive governments have continued the tradition allowing only smaller processions in the interiors of the Srinagar city.
However Shia mourners defy ban every year and make attempts to take out the procession only to be met with violence by the state forces. The entire stretch from Guru Bazar to Dalgate turns into a battle zone throughout the day.
