5-Year-Old Only Survivor
SRINAGAR A vehicle carrying pilgrims to a temple, skidded off the road and fell into the Chenab river in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, killing 11 people with a five-year-old child being the only survivor, police said.
The incident took place when they were going to the Mata Machail temple in the district.
“A vehicle carrying pilgrims to the Machail Mata temple rolled down and fell into the Chenab river, around 28 km from Kishtwar, in the Padder belt area today,” Jammu and Kashmir DGP S P Vaid told PTI.
During the rescue operation 11 bodies were recovered. The only survivor is a five-year-old child, he said, adding that the child is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The description of the vehicle and the gender of the child are yet to be known.
This is the second major accident in Kishtwar district in the past 24 hours.
Yesterday, seven people, including a policeman, were killed and 12 others injured after two vehicles came under a landslide in the district.
The incident took place at Kulligad on the Doda-Kishtwar road.
Huge boulders and debris suddenly came down from a hill burying a mini-bus and a car plying on the Doda-Kishtwar road, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajinder Kumar Gupta had said.
Plug loopholes: Mirwaiz
Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed his grief over the death of 18 people in two separate road accidents in Kishtwar in last two days and termed the deaths as very unfortunate.
In a statement issued here, Mirwaiz said that almost every day, people die in road accidents and landslides in J&K and it is the responsibility of concerned authorities to plug the loopholes to bring down the number of accidents that are taking serious toll on human life.
Mirwaiz expressed solidarity with families of those whose dear ones died in the road accidents at Kishtwar and prayed for the speedy recovery of injured.
Governor expresses grief over loss of lives
Governor N.N. Vohra has expressed grief over the loss of lives in a tragic accident in which a vehicle carrying Machail Yatra pilgrims rolled down into Chenab River in Kishtwar district. Conveying his sincere sympathy to the next of kin of the deceased passengers he has wished speedy recovery to those injured in the accident. Governor has issued directions to the Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar to ensure immediate medical treatment to the injured.
Governor, who has repeatedly expressed concern over recurring road accidents, has today directed Divisional Commissioners Kashmir and Jammu to ensure that the Deputy Commissioners hold immediate meetings of the District Road Safety Committees and he shall chair a meeting this Saturday to review causes of recurring fatal accidents.
