SRINAGAR A 45 year old patient from Pulwama who came with gastrointestinal bleed and hemoglobin of 6gm% was admitted in emergency ward of star hospitals.
When Dr Mir Sammiullah assesed the patient, he found both upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy were negative. CT abdomen revealed a large mass in abdomen arising from small bowel. After blood transfusions patient was taken for surgery and a large mass (GIST) about 4 Kgs in weight was excised.
According to Dr Sammiullah, tumour was actively bleeding and could have lead to death of patient if not treated properly on time. Gastrointestinal stromal tumours are rare tumours of GI Tract which arise from interstitial cells of cajal present in intestinal wall. Emergency surgeries are now being performed by Dr Sammiullah round the clock at star Hospital Sanat nagar which include surgeries for appendicitis, obstructed hernias, DU perforations,trauma and other emergency surgeries.
Speaking about the surgery Dr Mir Sammiullah stressed on the fact that timing and urgency are important in such emergency procedures and operating such patients on time makes the difference of life and death. (CNS)
