SRINAGAR A three-year-old boy was crushed to death by a speedy school bus in Khanyar area of capital Srinagar, police said on Monday.
An official said Wasif Qayoom was walking along with his uncle when a school bus hit him near Shiraz Chowk early this morning.
The child died on the spot, said the official, adding the deceased hailed from Nowgam area of uptown Srinagar.
We have arrested the driver and seized his vehicle. Further investigations are going on, he added.
It is noteworthy that yellow school buses are often found running beyond prescribed speed limits and rash driving has resulted in many accidents in the past.
TRAFFIC MESS
Meanwhile, despite strenuous efforts by high profile IGP Police (Traffic) Basant Rath, traffic in the city is far from normal.
Frequent traffic snarls with commuters and motorists stuck in long gridlocks is testing the patience of public.
Rash driving and flouting of rules by minibuses and Sumo cabs is major cause of the mess.
These buses and cabs stop anywhere disregarding the traffic following them. “If only they stop at designated bus stops for picking and dropping passengers half of the problem would be over”, experts suggest.
The places where most of the traffic jams are witnessed include Jehangir Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Residency Road, Regal Crossing, TRC Crossing, Dalgate Crossing, Batamalu, Qamarwari and Hawal.
