Convocation Officer Prof. Farooq Ahmad Shah on challenges of holding the maiden event
Can you please tell me how difficult was it to hold the convocation keeping in view of the present situation? And how did you manage it?
Central University of Kashmir came into being in the year 2009 and it started its academic activities in 2010 by offering PG programs in Business Administration, English and Information Technology. Ever since, the university has expanded its academic canvas and presently the university offers around 20 research, post-graduate and under-graduate courses. Despite tremendous expansion, the university has not been able to hold the convocation till date even if we had planned to hold such convocation before. In fact, university had plans to hold the first convocation in 2014 and then in 2016. However, both these times the convocation could not eventually mature because of the reasons beyond our control.
This time around, we were hopeful that the convocation would actually be held and thank God we have been able to see it through. Everyone in the university, right from the Honble Vice Chancellor to the Registrar, the Deans, the HoDs and all others worked very hard for the successful conduct of the first convocation.
It was a bit difficult for us to hold this convocation as elaborate arrangements were to be put in place keeping in view the number of graduates who are being conferred with the degrees. In fact there has been a huge backlog and graduates and pass-outs of six years are being conferred with the degrees in this first convocation which should have ideally been done in six annual convocations. As a matter of fact, convocation is an occasion where those who pass out from the university in a particular year are formally conferred with the degrees and awarded the certificates. And most of the universities elsewhere in the world at large do hold convocations every year and in future we are hopefully going to organize this degree and medal award ceremony year after year.

What were the other challenges?
The other challenge was the venue of convocation. As we know that Central University of Kashmir is in its formative years and still operating from rented campuses scattered at different places, arranging such a huge function outside our own campus was a huge challenge. But somehow with the dedication and active involvement of every teaching and non-teaching member of the university, under the dynamic leadership of Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj-ud-din Mir, we could conduct it smoothly. Next time, God willing, we would hold the convocation in our own campus at Ganderbal.
Can you please tell us how many students are going to receive the degrees? Also can you tell us how many students are receiving Gold Medals during the convocation?
In this first convocation, 1057 pass-outs are being conferred with the degrees in-person and more than 1000 in-absentia. Besides, 56 meritorious students are being awarded with gold medals and merit certificates for their outstanding academic performance. In addition, 24 research scholars are being conferred with Ph.D and M.Phil degrees in various disciplines including Management Studies, Tourism Studies, English and Education.
What are the expectations from the convocation?
Convocation is, in fact, part of the academics. It is a moment of accomplishment for students and a mark a beginning in the changed role of their lives. Convocation also brings a university in the limelight. The first convocation of the university is likely to achieve its objectives.
