SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Lakes and Waterway Development Authority (LAWDA) have demolished illegal constructions which had came up in the summer capital, Srinagar, during the past week, taking advantage of prevailing situation after the hanging of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on February 9.
Official sources said today a two storied building at high security Gupkar area of the city was demolished after the owner failed to produce building permission from the SMC.
The SMC officials, assisted by police razed the building. However, the owner said the area falls under the jurisdiction of Cantonment and the action of the SMC was illegal.
The local residents questioned where were the SMC officials when the two storied building was being constructed.
Meanwhile, the LAWDA demolished 20 illegal structures in and around world famous Dal Lake.
Officials said some people taking advantage of prevailing situation in Srinagar, had constructed illegal structures in the interior of the Lake and catchment areas.
They said the LAWDA’s Enforcement Squad demolished 20 illegal structures various areas including Northern and Western Foreshore road and Shalimar.
