NEW DELHI Congress president Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and many other leaders tonight expressed shock over the brutal killing of veteran journalist and Rising Kashmir editor Shujaat Bukhari and his PSOs by unidentified gunmen outside the newspaper’s office in Srinagar.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi described him as a “brave heart” who fought fearlessly for justice and peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
“I’m anguished to hear about the killing of Shujaat Bukhari, editor of Rising Kashmir. He was a brave heart who fought fearlessly for justice and peace in Jammu and Kashmir. My condolences to his family. He will be missed,” he said on Twitter.
“Saddened and shocked at the brutal killing of respected editor and senior journalist @bukharishujaat. With a few hours to go for Eid this is terrible,” Banerjee posted on her official twitter handle.
Union minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said the killing was a brutal attack on freedom of press.
“Assassination of #ShujaatBukhari is a brutal attack on freedom of press. A cowardly and deplorable act of terror. Our fearless media is one of the greatest strength of our democracy and we are committed to provide a safe and conducive working environment to media persons,” the information and broadcasting minister tweeted.
Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said he was “deeply saddened” to learn about the “dastardly killing” of the veteran journalist.
“Such an attempt to suppress the sane voices by terrorists will never succeed,” he said in a tweet.
Press Information Bureau (PIB) chief Sitanshu Kar said Bukhari’s voice of moderation will be missed by all.
Condemning the Killing, leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha (MP) and Former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has termed his killing a big loss for journalism in Kashmir.
