SRINAGAR Lt Gen Ranbir Singh of the Dogra regiment was on Wednesday appointed as the General Officer Commanding (GoC) of Northern Army Command in Udhampur.
Singh, who as Director General of Military Operations had informed Pakistan of surgical strikes, replaced Lt Gen Dev Raj Anbu, who has been appointed as the Vice-Chief of the Indian Army.
Sources said, Singh, presently posted as Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information Systems & Training) at Army Headquarters will take over the new assignment on June 1, 2018.
Lt Gen Ranbir Singh hails from Jalandhar district of Punjab.
He is an alumnus of Sainik School, Kapurthala, National Defence Academy, Pune and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He has also attended Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Faculty of Studies at Army War College, Mhow and Royal College of Defence Studies, UK.
Singh was commissioned into 9 Dogra Regiment on 13 December 1980. He has held various important Command, Staff and Instructor appointments during his career. He is considered to be an expert at counter insurgency operations, operational art and information operations.
During his career, he has been awarded with Yudh Seva Medal (2010) as the Brigadier of 181 Mountain Brigade and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal twice (2015, 2018) for his service.
