SRINAGAR Police on Friday claimed to have foiled a rifle-snatching bid by the militants in south Kashmirs Anantnag district.
An official said that militants approached police guard at Wanpoh power grid station with an intention to loot weapons.
However, the alert sentry fired some shots forcing the militants to flee, he said, adding the area has been cordoned off to nab the attackers.
SSP Kulgam Harmeet Singh told GNS that the militants had come with an intention to snatch rifles.
A number of rifle snatching incidents occurred in Valley parts. Among them, three major incidents of rifle snatching took place in Srinagar alone during the past 15 days. Four rifles were snatched from a guard post in Hyderpora, a rifle from a guard at the Kashmir University gate and three rifles from a guard room in a hotel in Dalgate area.
In the wake of these incidents, the ADGP has directed that no sentry will be allowed to use smartphone during duty hours. Sentries, especially those on guard duty, have been asked to wear bulletproof gear and chain their weapons with their belts.
