SRINAGAR: A grave site has been identified for Muhammad Afzal Guru at the Martyrs Graveyard at the Eidgah in Srinagar, with a tomb-stone already in place.
The inscription on the engraved plaque reads Shaheed-e-Watan, or National Martyr.
Carrying the date of Gurus execution and burial at New Delhis Tihar Jail last week, the inscription in Urdu further reads: Afzal Guru: whose mortal remains are a trust with the government of India. The nation urgently awaits the return of his body.
The vice-chairman of the JKLF (R), Tahir Ahmad Mir said that the grave site had been selected alongside that of the JKLF founder Muhammad Maqbool Bhat who too was executed and buried in the premises of the Tihar Jail 29 years ago. His remains have yet to be returned.
We have placed the tombstone at the mazar-e-shuhada on behalf of the Kashmiri nation, Mir said.
It bears mention that Muhammad Afzal Gurus family has demanded the return of his body for burial at his hometown in Sopore.
