BegularuKarnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala has invited BS Yeddyurappa to form the government in the state and gave the party 15 days to prove its majority, while the oath-taking ceremony will be held at 9 am on Thursday, said BJP’s Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday night.
The BJP Karnataka also confirmed that party leader Yeddyurappa will be sworn in as chief minister on Thursday at 9am.
In a tweet, it said: “The moment that crores of Kannadigas are awaiting is here. Sri @BSYBJP will take oath as Chief Minister of Karnataka tomorrow morning at 9.00 AM at Raj Bhavan. The movement to build our Suvarna Karnataka has started.”
Interestingly, earlier the BJP Karnataka had deleted it tweet announcing Yeddyurappas swearing-in as the CM on Thursday at 9.30 am. Here’s the screenshot of the tweet:
Also, party spokesman Suresh Kumar claimed on Wednesday Yeddyurappa would be sworn in as chief minister on Thursday.
“BS Yeddyurappa will take oath as chief minister at 9.30 am at Raj Bhavan tomorrow. Let us all gather on this happy occasion,” Kumar said in a tweet in Kannada.
There was, however, no official communique from Raj Bhavan.
Earlier, amid allegations and counter-allegations of horse-trading and poaching of MLAs, a busload od Congress MLAs met the governor to stake claim to form government in a post-poll alliance with the JD(S). Yeddyurappa visited the governor in the morning on Wednesday and said he is hopeful that the BJP will form the government.
The BJP, although having a majority at 104 seats does not have enough numbers to form government single handedly. The Congress, emerging as the second-largest party with 78 seats, is trying to stake claim by forging an alliance with the JD(S) which bagged 37 seats, and two independent MLAs. Halfway-mark is 112 seats in the 222 seats Assembly.
The Congress asserted that the governor has no option but to invite the JD(S)-Congress combine which has a “clear majority” to form the government in the state, based on constitutional and legal provisions. The BJP rejected what it called the “backdoor entry” of the Congress to form government in the state, while the latter said it is a constitutional right, going by the precedents in Goa and Manipur.
