SRINAGAR: The family of Afzal Guru received official communication of his hanging on Monday morning, two days and a night after the death penalty was carried out on the parliament attack-accused in the Tihar Jail Delhi, and beamed across India as breaking news.
Such communication usually sent in advance out of human considerations was callously delayed as reports suggested that the letter had been signed by the jail superintendent concerned three days prior to the hanging.
Gurus family said that they learnt about his execution from TV news channels.
The stamp and postal markings on the envelope indicate the letter was posted in Delhi at seven minutes past midnight on Saturday, barely eight hours before Guru was put to death.
Postal authorities here said that the Speed Post packet from Delhi was received here on Saturday, but could not be delivered as the next day (Sunday) was a holiday.
Addressed to Gurus wife (now widowed) for your information, the letter, which she received on Monday, February 11, says that the mercy petition of her husband had been rejected, and that he would be hanged in jail number three of Tihar in New Delhi on Saturday, February 9.
Meanwhile, Gurus counsel said that he would get in touch with the family to decide on urging the government to return his mortal remains to kith and kin.
