SRINAGAR: Reiterating his stand that capital punishment was not an effective deterrent against crime, CPI (M) state secretary, M Y Tarigami said the decision of hanging Afzal Guru has been taken keeping narrow considerations in mind.
In principle I have consistently been of this view that capital punishment is not an effective deterrent against any crime including terrorism. This is clearly demonstrated by the world experience, said Tarigami said.
The decision of Haging of Afzal Guru I think has been taken keeping in view the narrow considerations in mind rather than the security concerns of the country, he added.
Tarigami said while deciding on hanging Guru, the interests of the state have been overlooked.
Sensitivities of the J&K state have been ignored which I am afraid will only help those who are to undermine the peace process in Jammu and Kashmir, he added. kns
