SRINAGAR: A curfew was declared across 10 districts of the Kashmir Valley after the execution of Afzal Guru at Delhi’s Tihar Jail this morning.
Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri Muslim, had been on death row for nearly eight years.
Afzal Guru was convicted for his role in the attack on Parliament in 2001. His mercy petition was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee a few days ago.
Afzal was hanged at 8 a.m and authorities have decided against shifting his remains to Kashmir. They said Afzal will be buried inside Tihar Jail.
Earlier JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat too was hanged in the same jail in 1984 and buried in the prison premises.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has repeatedly stressed that his execution could have serious repercussions in his state.
A news black out has been imposed and all cable TV services have been disconnected in the Valley.
Guru was hanged three days before Maqbool’s 29th death anniversary and at a time when demands for return of his remains were gaining momentum.
Guru was convicted of plotting the raid on India’s Parliament in 2001 that left 14 people dead, including five attackers, and brought nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan to the brink of war.
