SrinagarFaisal Rashid was the star as J&K Police XI had a better off Maharaja Football Club in a close contest by 1-0 in the league phase of the first Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Memorial (MMSM) Football Tournament played at Synthetic Turf TRC Ground, Srinagar, a statement from Jammu and Kashmir Football Association said on Thursday.
A decent crowd had come to watch the game between two evenly matched sides, and they obliged with some classic display of football. The intensity and will to get better off each other remained at its full throttle throughout the tenure of the game.
The start to the first half was brisk with both teams eager to press home the advantage early in the piece but couldnt translate efforts into goals. Faisal Rashid broke the deadlock in the 25th minute finding the net to have J&K Police XI leading by a goal.
A goal in arrears, Maharaja Sports upped the ante in search of an equaliser but all their advances were thwarted by J&K Police defenders to go into half time break with the latter ahead by a goal.
The second half also proved to be mouth watering as no team was ready to give even an inch. Attacks and counter attacks was the hallmark of the match. The Maharaja players launched several counter attacks, but the goalkeeper J&K Police XI ensured no damage was done.
In the last 10 minutes of the play, both teams made several attempt to score but couldnt cross the last hurdle. Maharaja Sports made purposeful attempts to make it 1-1 in the last minutes of the game but were denied everytime by alert and skillful defence line of J&K Police XI.
When the referee blew the final whistle, the score line read 1-0 in favour of J&K Police. Zahid Ahmad of Maharaja FC defender was declared as player of the match despite his team losing.
Meanwhile, in Jammu region the matches of the event are going on in full swing at different venues. In a B-Division match, Akhnoor FC defeated SFA, Jammu by Six goals to nil. The match was played at GGM Science College, Ground in Jammu. Hundreds of spectators witnessed the match.
