SRINAGAR: A JKLF march demanding the return of the mortal remains of founder Muhammad Maqbool Bhat was foiled by the police on Friday, even as a number of Front leaders and supporters, including its acting chairman, advocate Bashir Ahmad Bhat, were taken into custody.
Heading for the UNMOGIP office in Sonwar, the marchers were blocked by the police near Budshah Chowk, and their leaders taken away to lock-ups.
Carrying placards and banners, the procession had been raising pro-freedom slogans, and chanting for the return of the JKLF founders remains from the Tihar Jail in Delhi.
Apart from its acting chairman, those arrested included Javed Ahmad Mir of JKLF(H), and Front leaders Noor Mohammad Kalwal, Shaukat Ahmad Bakhshi, Ghulam Rasool Hazari, Ghulam Mohammad Dar and Bashir Ahmad Wagay.
Earlier, addressing the rally, Bashir Ahmad Bhat said: We are protesting against the brutal and undemocratic act of the Indian state which it demonstrated on the 11th February 1984 when it hanged our Father of nation and buried his dead body inside jail premises.
The act is undemocratic, inhuman and brutal as no moral or human law allowed the refusal of dead body to the family members of deceased, he said.
Bhat also read out a JKLF memorandum to UN secretary general.
Our demand is for a peaceful, political and permanent solution for Kashmir that would herald the dawn of a new stability in sub continent and which will end the agony of the past for 13 millions Kashmiri people. India and Pakistan should part with the territories of Jammu and Kashmir now under their respective control, the memorandum, which was to be delivered at the UN office, read.
Today on the occasion of 29th Martyrdom anniversary of our beloved leaders Mohammad Maqbool Butt we protest and demand to the U N to force India to hand over the mortal remains of martyr Maqbool Butt to the people of Jammu and Kashmir so that it is buried with honor and respect at martyrs graveyard Eid Gah Srinagar Kashmir, it said.
