SRINAGAR: Police have launched a crackdown on the online abusers, whose hate messages on social networking website Facebook, followed by a controversial decree by Grand Mufti forced the all-girls rock band ‘Pragaash’ into silence.
They have started tracking down the IP addresses of the 26 users whose comments, out of the total 900 posts on the band’s page, were found abusive, officials said today.
They said the delay of three days in lodging the FIR was due to large number of posts on the Facebook page of ‘Pragaash’, that took time to get scanned.
A case into the matter has been registered under Section 66A of IT Act and Section 506 RPC (criminal intimidation) in the Rajbagh police station here.
A member of the band had yesterday said they decided to call it quits as they respected the decree of Kashmir’s grand mufti who found singing un-Islamic.
“We respect the Mufti sahib who said it (singing) is ‘Haram’. We respect the opinion of people of Kashmir also. That is why we quit,” she said, adding that the band was not disbanded because of online threats. Agencies
Two days after their public performance, a Facebook page Kashmir News posted a photograph of all band members with caption stating: “Personally, I consider them as shameless and spoiled brats”
Subsequently, the post got reactions from lot of people criticising the girls. Some even went on to say, “post this status in advance. The three band girls raped Jammu. And thrown in river.”
Some Facebook users described their performance as anti-Islam. The Facebook post has received nearly 1000 comments. The Facebook comments and subsequent fatwa by the Grand Mufti asking girls to desist from the music forced the girls to quit. Agencies
