SRINAGAR: Festive processions were taken out in many parts of the valley on Friday to mark the joyous occasion of the Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (pbuh), even as the government foiled a march by the Democratic Political Movement in Srinagar.
Large numbers of people flying flags of Islamic green on vehicles and chanting religious slogans wound through streets in a colourful and rapturous sight.
In Srinagar, the Karvan-e-Islami took out a procession from the Sarai Payeen and marched out of the city.
Maulana Ghulam Rasool Hami, who led the march addressed the rally at its culmination in Shadipur several kilometres outside Srinagar.
Processions were also taken out in Nigeen, Harwan, Shalimar, Sonwar with their vehicles streaming green flags.
In Baramulla, Milad marches emerged from the shrine of Hazrat Janbaz Wali, and in Anantnag, the Mirwaiz of South Kashmir, Qazi Yasir led a procession from the towns main mosque.
In Dooru, Prof Ghulam Nabi led a Milad procession from the Khanaqah-e-Faiz Panah, while similar marches were held in other South Kashmir towns like Achabal, Vilgam, Shangus, Pahalgam and Kojernag.
Processions were taken out from mosques and shrines in the Pulwama district as well.
Meanwhile, in Srinagar, separatist groups flayed the government for foiling a Milad march by the Democratic Political Movement.
They said that the police action, which included cane charge and arrest of several party leaders, amounted to interference in religious affairs.
