JAMMU: A delegation comprising Officials of National Trust and representatives of various Delhi based NGOs, working for the welfare and rehabilitation of disabled persons, today called on the Minister for Social Welfare, ARI, & Trainings and Public Grievances, Ms Sakina Itto, at her Office Chamber, Civil Secretariat, Jammu.
Comprising of Chairperson of National Trust, Ms Poonam Nataranjan, Regional Director CMB SARO, Banglore, Dr. Sara Varughese, Legal Advisor of National Trust of India, Mr. Umesh Shukla, Advocacy Lead, CMB SARO, Mr. Umesh Baurai and Alliance and Networking Officer, CBM SARO,Mr. Jesuraj, the team discussed various issues and gave details of the efforts being made by the National Trust for rehabilitation of the physically challenged persons.
Informing the Minister about various activities of National Trust towards emancipation of this section of the society, the delegation gave various suggestions with regard to the welfare of special children, like imparting of skill training and education. The team members pleaded for implementation of National Trust Act in Jammu and Kashmir State for providing more facilities to the physically challenged persons, particularly introduction of health insurance scheme.
Interacting with the visiting delegation, the Minister said that the State Government has already taken a number of steps to improve the lot of this section of the society by providing pension and scholarship and other facilities under Disability Act, 1998. She further said that her department has already asked the Transport department for reserving seats in the public transport vehicles for these people, while Education Department has been asked to provide them job share. She said that Health Department was also directed to prioritise this section of the society with regard to medical facilities.
She also informed the members that as per disability Act, the state Government constituted a review committee and on the recommendation of it, the post of Teacher, Junior Engineer (Civil) and Junior Engineer Mechanical have been included in the list of job providing for reservation for such persons . She said this move was expected to benefit a huge number of candidates of this category.
Ms Sakina asked the members of the Trust to submit a proposal to her department, while assuring that best provisions would recommended for the incorporation in the State Act.
The meeting was attended by Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Mr.Gazenffer, Director Social Welfare, Kashmir, Mr. Bashir Ahmed Bhat, Director Social Welfare, Jammu, Mr. M.H.Bathi ,OSD, Dr. G.N Itoo, and other senior officers of the department.
