New Delhi-A Delhi court Wednesday sent Syed Shahid Yousuf, son of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin, to seven days NIA custody in connection with a 2011 funding case for allegedly receiving money from his father.
Shahid, who was arrested Tuesday by National Investigation Agency (NIA), was produced before District and Sessions Judge Poonam A Bamba, who allowed the probe agency s plea for his custody.
According to the agency, 42-year-old Shahid, who works in the agricultural department of the Jammu and Kashmir government, was summoned to the agency’s headquarters where he was arrested after questioning yesterday.
The NIA alleged that Shahid used to receive funds through a US-based international wire transfer company from Aijaz Ahmed Bhat, another accused in the case who is absconding and is reported to be based in Saudi Arabia.
The agency has alleged that Shahid was “one of several Indian contacts of Bhat” who had been in telephonic contact with him for receiving money transfer codes.
The NIA has claimed that so far Shahid has received a total of nearly Rs 4.5 lakh through eight international wire transfers.
The case, registered by the NIA in April 2011, relates to the transfer of money from Pakistan to Jammu and Kashmir through hawala channels via Delhi, which the agency claims was used in militant activities.
Meanwhile the family of Hizb chief Syed Salahuddin on Wednesday said that Shahid Yousuf was arrested to pressurise their father.
In a statement, the family while maintaining that Shahid was innocent, said that his arrest was an age-old tactic by the Delhi government to harass the family and to defame our father.
This is an attempt to pressurize our father into submission by Delhi. We are peace loving people and want the issue to be settled through meaningful dialogue, they said.
We further want to state that we have never been involved in any terror funding activities in the state, and our record during past 28 years is crystal clear and can be verified by the police and CID.
Our brother Shahid Yousuf is a peaceful citizen , and NIA has incriminated him in absolutely fake charges of terror funding to pressurise our father.
Our right to live peacefully is being snatched by State & central Govt, they claimed.
Shahid was arrested by the National Investigation Agency yesterday for his alleged role in financing of Hizb ul Mujahideen.
Admits Receiving Funds To Stoke Trouble
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Tuesday claimed Syed Shahid Yousuf, Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin, had admitted he received funds for subversive activities in the Kashmir Valley.
Yousuf, who was sent to seven days of custody to the agency for further questioning, had also given the names of overseas Hizbul Mujahideen members involved in fund-raising for the militant outfit, an NIA spokesman said.
The 42-year-old Shahid, who works in the agricultural department of the Jammu and Kashmir government, was arrested here yesterday.
The NIA claimed during questioning he “admitted to having received funds from cadres of the Hizbul Mujahideen on the direction of his father, Mohammed Yusuf Shah alias Syed Salahuddin, for fomenting terrorist activities in the Valley”.
The NIA has so far filed two charge sheets against six people including G M Bhat, a close aide of pro-Pakistan separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mohammed Siddiq Ganai, Ghulam Jeelani Liloo and Farooq Ahmed Dagga. All four are in judicial custody.
Two others — Mohammed Maqbool Pandit and Bhat — were also charge sheeted by the NIA but are absconding. An Interpol Red Corner notice has been issued against them.
