TralResidents of Chechkout area in South Kashmir’s Awantipora, beat up a policeman on Saturday evening after they mistook him for a braid-chopper, on Srinagar Jammu National Highway.
Soon after the incident , a police team from Awantipora rescued the cop from the locals and said that he was not a braid-chopper and was on the way from Srinagar to attend duty in Anantnag, where he is currently posted.
They said that the cop was identified as Zakir Hussain Malik S/O Amanullah Malik of Tangdaar area in North Kashmir. He was accompanying his wife to Srinagar hospital early in the morning from Anantnag after she fell ill there, police said.
SSP Awantipora Zahid Ahmad while talking to Kashmir Observer said the police received information about some people thrashing a cop who was alleged to be a braid-chopper.
The innocent cop was rescued soon after police team reached the spot, he said, adding that they have arrested some youth for questioning in this regard.
“I am requesting people again not to take law in their hands and cooperate with police,” Zahid Said.
