SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir remained under the grip of an intense cold wave Tuesday and Jammu city recorded its lowest maximum temperature in 30 years.A fresh Western Disturbance is approaching the region which could result in rain or snow in the Kashmir valley.
Sonam Lotus, director of the regional meteorological department told IANS that Jammu city Monday recorded 6.7 degrees Celsius as maximum temperature — the lowest in 30 years.
Capital Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season after the minimum dipped to minus 5.5 degree. Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region also witnessed the coldest night of the winter so far.
A fresh WD originating in Arabian Sea and entering the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, is approaching the Kashmir valley. ‘We expect rain or snow on higher reaches of the Kashmir valley in the next 24 hours,’ he said here this afternoon.
Higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley are likely to receive light snowfall Wednesday, he said.
“Slight cloudiness in the evening tomorrow (Wednesday) would give some relief from the intense cold wave as we are expecting light snowfall in the higher reaches,” Lotus said.
Jammu and Kashmir has been reeling under cold wave conditions for a fortnight. Minimum temperatures in the valley and Ladakh have failed to rise above the freezing point.
A foggy weather and unprecedented cold have thrown life out of gear in Jammu where authorities have extended school holidays to Jan 13.
