SrinagarThe district administration Srinagar on Friday imposed restrictions in Srinagar parts falling under the jurisdiction of seven Police Stations to thwart any possible protest against the unabated braid chopping incidents that have engulfed city population in fear.
The protest call was given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.
The restrictions under section 144 CrPC were imposed in Srinagar parts falling under the jurisdiction of Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safakadal, M R Gunj, Maisuma and Kralkhud police stations as precautionary measure.
Witnesses said that the police and paramilitary forces were deployed in large numbers in downtown areas to thwart protests.
The roads leading to the restriction bound areas were sealed by the forces with erecting concertina wires. Nobody was allowed to move in the restricted areas, witnesses said.
The forces were also seen patrolling in the armoured vehicles throughout the day.
Kashmirs central Jamia Masjid, situated in Nowhatta area of downtown
was locked by the authorities for the third consecutive week today.
The authorities didnt allow the mandatory Friday prayers in the Jamia Masjid today, local said.
Besides, the Jamia Masjids head preacher, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq continued to remain under house detention.
Sources said that the Mirwaiz was once again barred from addressing a gathering at Jamia Masjid here.
Meanwhile, the locals at Batamaloo area in Srinagar protested against the fresh braid chopping incidents, who alleged that the authorities have failed to ensure safety of Kashmiris.
Earlier, the state Police asserted that 100 incidents of braid chopping occurred in Kashmir so far while ruing the lack of co-operation from the members of public.
They have also announced a reward of Rs six lakhs for credible information about the braid choppers.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Range, Munir Ahmad Khan said that stone pelting incidents were reported in a few parts of Srinagar including Saida Kadal and Wanbal area of Nowgam today.
He said that barring these stone pelting incidents, the situation remained peaceful.
