SrinagarDr Syed Naseer Ahmad Shah former Principal of Government Medical College, Srinagar breathed his last Wednesday at his Boulevard residence after protracted illness.
Various social and political personalities have mourned his demise.
A medical luminary, Dr Shah passed his MBBS from King Edward Medical College Lahore, Pakistan and after completing his FRCP from Edinburgh, United Kingdom he joined GMC and became Principal of this prestigious institution.
Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti condoled the demise of veteran Physician, Dr Naseer.
Paying tributes to late Dr. Naseer, the Chief Minister said he would for long be remembered for promoting teaching and raising the level of medical education in the College.
Mehbooba Mufti has prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and conveyed her personal sympathies to Dr. Girja Dhar, wife of late Dr. Naseer.
Dr Nisar ul Hassan who heads a doctors association described late doctor a legend and said the demise has left a great void in the field of medicine.
Dr Shah promoted teaching and raised level of medical education and during his tenure as Principal, GMC was rated No 3 in academics at national level, he said
It was because of him that medical services became more specialized and differentiated. He used his personal influence to get postgraduation in many specialities recognized by MCI, said Dr Hassan adding that GMC received recognition by MCI during his tenure.
He said an outreach programe named as Chitranjan Mobile Hospital was a significant contribution by his efforts and the hospital extended high quality health care services to people in far-flung areas.
Dr Shah was a compassionate and empathetic doctor and had attained great respect from his patients, Dr Hassan said.
More than a doctor and teacher, he was a guide and a father figure because of which he was very popular among his employees, he added.
