SRINAGAR: Admitting that lack of proper road infrastructure and deficiency of manpower are the main cause behind traffic jams and road mishaps, Minister for Information Technology, Aga Syed Ruhullah said despite manifold increase in number of vehicles roads in the valley remain the same as they were in 1940.
Valley is having the same roads that it had in 1940. In caparison to metropolitan and other major cities Valley is far behind as far progress and development are concerned. Number of vehicles on the roads has increased manifold while the size of the roads is same as it was in 1940. We (Kashmir) are 100 years behind progress and development of metropolitan cities. 70% roads have not been upgraded since last 40 years resulting in traffic jams, said Ruhullah while addressing concluding function of Road Safety Week at Banquet Hall on Monday. He said that for traffic jams traffic police cannot be blamed as the department is lacking infrastructure and sufficient man power.
Terming the year 2012 as peaceful which witnessed 13 lac tourists visiting State, IGP Kashmir S.M. Sahai said that Traffic Police played magnificent role in controlling the traffic in the valley despite huge rush.
It was challenge for the traffic police to control the flow traffic and it took it and performed duties well. General public have also proved and acted in a civilized manner by showing respect to the traffic signals. All VIPs including Chief Minister is showing respect to these lights and it has resulted in a lot of convenience to the general public, said Sahai. He appealed youth not to indulge into rash driving.
We expect more rush of tourists to the Valley in year 2013 and our Traffic Police is enough competent to control the traffic during that season as well, said Sahai.
Thanking people and police for their cooperation for making the event successful, DIG Traffic Shafqat Watali in his address said that such kind of programmes have an objective to send out a message to people and stop road accidents. During this programme district police cooperated with us and put their best efforts for the benefit of people. It is cooperation of general public and police that we could make the programme successful, said Watali.
Pertinently, Road Safety Week was organized by Motor Vehicles Department and Traffic Police jointly. The week was being observed across the country which began from January 1 and lasted upto January 7.
