Search for new KU VC begins

Srinagar—The serving Vice Chancellor of University of Kashmir is unlikely to get a second term even as a three-member search committee has been constituted by the government for finding an eligible person for the coveted job.

The term of VC Dr Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi is ending on 17 October this year when his three-year term ends. Andrabi was appointed October 2014.

Sources told KNS that Andrabi is unlikely to get the second term as the university has not shown any remarkable achievement in the last three years.

“No significant achievement took place as far as administrative, infrastructure and academic activities are kept in consideration. Many hopes were pitched when the present VC was given the top job,” students as well as faculty members told KNS.

Last week, committee comprising Prof. D P Aggarwal, former chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Prof. Seyed Ehtesham Hasnain, VC of the Jamia Hamdard University, Delhi along with Prof. Vinay Gupta, incumbent VC of the Sharda University, Noida was formed to look for the new VC.

Students said that the academic schemes like Choice Based System and two-shift classes did not help in their academics but created confusion.

They said that for these schemes proportionate and necessary infrastructure and faculty was not upgraded. They said that for research scholars no incentives and scholarship was increased for them.

The teachers rue that their long-pending demand of increasing their retirement age to 65 and promotions to the eligible faculty members were not met.

Amid the search for new VC, several professors of the university who are eligible for the job are in contention. They include Professor G M Sangmi of Management Studies, Prof Ghulam Mustafa of Zoology and Prof Akbar Masood of Biochemistry. (KNS)
