Baramulla Lawyers Demand Death Penalty For Rape
SRINAGAR: The High Court Bar Association on Thursday decided that no member would defend the Parraypora acid attack accused in court, even as lawyers in Baramulla held a march demanding the death penalty for rapists.
At a meeting today, the Bar Association condemned the acid attack on a young woman yesterday and made an appeal to local imams and mohalla committees to discourage gatherings of loafers and layabouts in the vicinity of tuition centres.
If someone gets away after attacking a girl with acid today, it could spark off a trend in the future, the Bar said.
Bar members unanimously decided not defend the acid attack accused in court, and pledged legal support to the victim, a statement said.
Meanwhile, lawyers in Baramulla demanded the death penalty for rapists, and expressed solidarity with the kin of the victims of the Shopian tragedy as well as the young woman who suffered severe injuries in an acid attack in Srinagar on Wednesday.
Marching with placards and banners, the lawyers approached residents for signatures in a campaign advocating the death penalty for rape.
Speaking on the occasion, noted advocate Bilal Ahmad Wani severely condemned the recent gang-rape in Delhi, and said that such violence on any woman was intolerable and unconscionable.
Existing laws punish rape with 10 years or life imprisonment, bit all sections of society are agreed that nothing less than the death penalty will do, he said.
His colleague, Azam Mushtaq Pandit, said that the rally was also in solidarity with the families of the Shopian victims, and demanded fitting punishment for their killers.
