AnantnagMocking at government claims, 74 students of five classes are crammed in two small rooms at a government-run school in Halamullah Hapatnar area of south Kashmirs Anantnag district.
The school building has only three classrooms; one is used for office and remaining two for classes.
Functioning in the jurisdiction of Zone Ashmuqam, the Government Primary School (GPS) Halamullah Hapatnar was establishment in December 2004 under Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS).
It was upgraded to Primary school in 2008. However, no additional building has been given to the school.
We are facing accommodation crunch and cant give proper accommodation facilities to the students enrolled here, said a teacher posted in the school.
“On one day we take classes of students from 1st primary to third primary under open sky while as the students of 4th and 5th class are adjusted in one room, said another teacher, adding that the routine changes the other day and the 4th ad 5th class students are made to sit in a classroom under open sky.But during rains or inclement weather conditions, the rooms remain congested and students are forced to take classes in a random manner, the teacher said.
When the teacher takes the class, the students huddled around the chair unlike other schools where teachers chair lies in front. These students are not from one class only but from three classes, resulting in chaos, confusion, and noise.
The other teacher has to wait for her turn to teach the rest of the classes. Then people accuse government teachers of not teaching their students, said a teacher in the primary school. You say, how can we teach three classes in just one class and that too at one time? The teacher asked.
The teachers say that the higher authorities tell them that they will arrange a spacious place for the school and they will send one more teacher here but nothing happens.
“The school has an enrollment of 74. The school has only two teachers, the teacher said. Besides proper accommodation, the schools lacks kitchen shed as well.
Nazia, a class 5th student said that government only claims that to provide best quality education to students but you can see here what quality education government provides to us.
Government, she said, was only playing with our future. The school is only for name sake. It lacks all basic facilities like proper staff, safe school building, classrooms, bathrooms and playground. That is why the official apathy has resulted in decrease in the roll of students in these government run middle Schools, she added.
“Education is a distant dream for us as we are studying in government run schools which hardly have proper working classrooms. We lack the same exposure and facilities available to the rich kids whose parents can afford to send them to private schools, Nazia said.
Meanwhile when contacted, chief education officer Anantnag said that the school was established under SSA and as per norms, there are two teachers and three room building. There is every facility in school, he claimed. (GNS)
